About Khenpo

Khenpo Tenzin Norgay was born in the Tashigang District of Bhutan in 1965. After completing Jigme Sherubling High School in 1986, he joined Ngagyur Nyingma Institute, the prestigious Buddhist studies and research center, at Namdroling Monastery in Mysore. At the Institute he studied under Khenchen Pema Sherab, Khenpo Namdrol Tsering and Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso and other visiting professors, including Khenchen Jigme Phuntsok and Khenpo Pema Tsewang from Tibet.

He completed the Shedra program at the Institute in 1995 and joined the Institute staff, teaching there for three years. He was formally enthroned as Khenpo by His Holiness Penor Rinpoche in 1998 and was assigned by His Holiness to teach at the Buddhist college at Palyul monastery in Tibet.

He has received all the major empowerments of the Rinchen Terzod, Nam Cho, Nyingthik Yabshi and Nyingma Kama from His Holiness Penor Rinpoche as well as the Mipham Kabum from His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche.

Because of his knowledge and experience, and fluent command of the English language, His Holiness Penor Rinpoche assigned Khenpo Norgay to teach students in the United States in conjunction with the ongoing teaching programs offered by Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso Rinpoche.

Khenpo Tenzin Norgay Retreat

March 5 through 8, 2010

Khenpo is returning to Namdroling to teach and guide us in practice. Please come and partake in this auspicious event. We will practice the Satsa Puja, so anyone who has ashes from pets are invited to bring them or send them to Namdroling along with a MINIMUM $50 payment per pet. (If you cannot make a payment at this time, then please know we will save your pet's ashes in the temple until we receive your payment. We will then make Satsas the next time we do the Satsa practice with Khenpo Norgay.)

If you can come and help make the Satsas and partake in the ritual, that would be wonderful for you and your pet. This is a beautiful practice and your pet's satsas will be in the satsa house receiving the blessings of all our lamas and practices done on a monthly basis at Namdroling.

Saturday, March 6 - 9:30 AM - Satsa Puja and Satsa making

Everyone's help will be needed for satsa making. We will begin making satsas during the morning practice and continue throughout the retreat until the Consecration on Monday, March 8. Those who are having pet's ashes made into satsas are especially encouraged to leave time open for satsa making.

What is a Satsa?

Satsa is a Tibetan Buddhist term used to describe the sacred art form of Buddhist relief images that are made as a part of a particular meditation practice. Traditionally, Satsas were made of clay from the earth, blessed and put on a shrine or in a safe place. When a High Lama (Buddhist Teacher) or a loved one passed away, a portion of the cremation ashes were mixed into the clay during a Blessing Ceremony or "Puja". The clay mixed with the ash and other blessed substances is pressed into a sacred relief mold. A rolled mantra, or prayer, is inserted and then all the satsas are consecrated and placed in the Satsa House. Lamas continue to visit and bless the satsa house, and family and friends are able to sponsor anniversary candle offerings.
